An Alternative to the SAP Crystal Reports Viewer

What is the situation with SAP's viewer today?
SAP still offers a free Crystal Reports Viewer, and Crystal Reports itself remains an active product. The viewer is positioned for one job: opening reports that were saved with data. SAP supports the current and one previous viewer version, and downloads of older viewer versions such as 2016 are no longer available. So the free viewer is not gone, but it is deliberately minimal, and that is exactly why people look for alternatives.
Where does the free viewer stop?
A saved-data viewer answers "what did this report say when it was run?" It does not answer "what does this report say right now?" If a report arrives without saved data, or the numbers need to be current, you need a viewer that can connect to the data source, log on, apply parameters, and refresh. Delivery is the other gap: reading a report is often just the first step before it has to reach someone else in the right format.
